Marvel Rivals has a problem: a tank problem. No one wants to have two Vanguards on their team, and it’s costing countless players their matches. Luckily, there’s a simple fix, all players need is a little convincing, and a badass hero.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I main as a Strategist and I know how frustrating it can be to play almost anything other than a DPS or a Duelist. If you lose, healers and tanks are instantly blamed, despite the lovely Black Widow showing up with two kills and begging for healing while trying to stand her ground in front of a murderous Wolverine who’s then shocked when she dies.
Vanguards are much the same; they’re expected to be damage soakers, all while somehow protecting others from questionable plays. As such, how can you not want to choose the more popular choice of a Duelist and avoid being berated? However, what happens from there is the issue Marvel Rivals is currently facing; no one wants to play Vanguard, and teams are suffering for it.
But what does it matter?
Thanks for the question…me. It does matter. It’s no secret that, while a 2,2,2 team comp is arguably more effective, a 1,3,2 balance is the most preferred in games like this. But then you take those three duelists, and you come up against two tanks, two healers, and those two DPS, and you can almost watch that win rate drop.
Nothing quite compares to a well-oiled team with two powerful Vanguards. They’re able to better tackle the enemy damage, and the healers can focus on keeping them alive while the DPS takes down the enemy from a safer position. It’s the strategy that’s been used for decades now, and that’s because it works.

So yes, playing as a Vanguard, and having two on your team is vital if you want to win most of your matches (obviously, it depends on your skill after that), but no one wants to play as a tank, so how do we combat that?
Give the people what they want
Well, you offer more Vanguards. If you take a look at the roster (don’t worry, I’m about to tell you anyway) then you’ll see there are currently nine Vanguards. Now compare that to the 20 Duelists and tell me why people would rather choose the latter.
Then, all you need to do is check out a tier list, and you’ll discover that only two of those tanks sit at s-tier, all of the others, aside from Luna Snow and Mantis, are Duelists. Even The Thing, who received tons of hype, sits at B-tier, so what’s the point, especially when Human Torch is in S.
Given that it’s clear, Marvel Rivals needs to create more Vanguards that are viable for S-tier and are made to destroy the enemy team. The better the Vanguards, the more likely players are to pick them. On top of this, a fantastic way to encourage Duelist mains to transfer over to Vanguard and create that 2,2,2 team is to implement Vanguards that hold similar traits to DPS fighters.
For example, Doc Ock from Spider-Man. This character could have the tankiness to be a stellar Hitscan tank who has the mobility of Duelists, the hitting power of a DPS, and the ability to tackle flying characters, giving him an edge players won’t be able to resist.

Rather than implementing other fighters that feel like a version of Hulk (looking at you, The Thing), what we need is an incentive for players to choose a Vanguard. And giving them a hero that’s powerful, badass, and easy to play regardless of their role main is undeniably the way forward.
Sure, it’s not likely to sway those diehard Duelist players, but if a popular and powerful Vanguard came onto the scene, then it would prompt players to master the role and hopefully allow for that classic 2,2,2 team comp to thrive once again and of course your winning streak.
