Just when you thought you had Marvel Rivals‘ ranked system all figured out, the developers decided to shake things up with the Season 2 update.
But don’t worry, it’s not all chaos and confusion. In fact, some of these changes might just make your competitive climb a tad more enjoyable.
Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of what’s new and how it affects your path to glory.
Every rank system change for Marvel Rivals in Season 2

No more mid-season rank resets
Before | After |
Players experienced a rank reset at the start and midpoint of each season, dropping several tiers. | Rank resets now occur only at the beginning of each season; mid-season resets have been eliminated. |
Previously, Marvel Rivals implemented rank resets both at the start and halfway through each season, which often led to frustration among players who had to reclaim their ranks multiple times.
Listening to community feedback, the developers have removed the mid-season reset. Now, your rank will only reset at the beginning of each new season.

Revised rank reset tiers
Before | After |
End-of-season rank reset reduced players by seven tiers (e.g., Grandmaster I to Platinum II). | Start-of-season rank reset now reduces players by six divisions; no mid-season reset. |
In the past, players faced a hefty seven-tier drop at the end of each season, making the climb back to their former glory quite the grind.
With the new system, the reset at the start of each season is slightly less punishing, reducing players by six divisions instead. For example, if you ended the season at Diamond I, you’d start the next at Platinum II.
Introduction of Pick/Ban phase in ranked matches
Before | After |
No pick/ban phase in ranked matches until Diamond 3. | Pick/ban phase introduced for players in Gold rank and above. |
To add a strategic layer to ranked matches, a pick/ban phase has been introduced for players at Gold rank and higher.
This means you can now ban certain heroes before a match begin. For instance, if a particular hero has been dominating the meta, you have the opportunity to ban them, potentially shifting the balance in your favor.

Map rotation updates
Before | After |
Static map pool in ranked playlist. | Yggsgard: Royal Palace and Tokyo 2099: Shin-Shibuya will be retired. Krakoa will be added. |
Gone are the days of the same old battlegrounds. Season 2 brings a dynamic map rotation to the ranked playlist. Notably, the new Krakoa map, inspired by the Hellfire Gala, has been added.
Competitive unlock level raised
Before | After |
Competitive mode unlocked at level 10. | Competitive now unlocks at level 15. Players who’ve already played ranked can still access it, even if under 15. |
Maybe letting level 10 players into Competitive was like handing car keys to someone who just learned what a steering wheel is.
In Season 2, Marvel Rivals raises the bar – new players now need to hit level 15 before jumping into ranked matches. That means more time to learn heroes, maps, and not charge into 1v5s like they’re Wolverine.
But don’t panic if you already played at least one valid ranked match – you’re grandfathered in, even if you’re under 15.
Increased weight on individual performance for Ranked Points
Before | After |
Ranked points were mostly based on win/loss outcome, with only slight adjustments for individual performance. | Individual performance will have a greater impact – better play means more points in wins and fewer losses in defeats. |
In the current system, you could pop off with 30 eliminations, 10 assists, and zero deaths – or if you’re a Strategist, 50k heals – but if your team threw the match, tough luck, you still ate a big LP loss. With Season 2.0, that’s changing. Now, your individual performance gets more credit where credit’s due.
So if you’re clutching fights, healing like a machine, or objectively outplaying the other team – you’ll gain more points when you win and won’t be punished as harshly if your team fumbles the bag. It’s a big step toward rewarding actual skill instead of pure team outcomes.
That’s everything you need to know about changes to competitive play in Marvel Rivals. If you want to know more about hero buffs and nerfs and Emma Frost‘s abilities, we’ve got you covered.
