Popular League of Legends add-on criticized for adding “cheat” feature players think should be banned

League of Legends, like many competitive multiplayer games, has several addons that are designed to add quality-of-life features and improve the overall experience. One of the most popular is Porofessor, but a new addition to its toolkit is causing significant controversy among the player base.
Correction – February 26: Porofesser has clarified an error in our reporting of this feature, explaining: “Our ultimate and spell timer countdowns aren’t triggered by in-game pings; users must manually start them by clicking the ability in the overlay. Additionally, our timers don’t account for Ability Haste or other cooldown reductions.” –– Alex Ennerfelt, Porofessor Product Owner.
Porofessor is an addon that does a lot of different things, including realtime game tracking and summoner stats. Those who download it for use can also take advantage of several features when they are actively playing.
One of the most controversial is Jungle timers, which provides an overlay so that Jungle players are fully aware of when camps will respawn. Many argue that this provides an unfair advantage over those who don’t have the app, though Porofessor retains its “Riot-approved” status regardless.
Now, it has added a new feature that builds a new timer into the software, and many aren’t happy with the advantage it offers.
LoL community believes Porofessor’s new feature goes too far
The newest feature added to Porofessor allows players to track the cooldown of opponent Ultimate Abilities by clicking them in the overlay when used. While this isn’t foolproof, it can be a huge advantage.
Over on Reddit, one player took to the LoL forums to register their distaste at this next step for Porofessor, with others agreement.
“Seems like Jungle timers situation all over again,” one said. “Riot has to either make it an in-game feature or prohibit using every app that do this. It’s weird that some people are trying to defend it saying ‘You can just calculate it.’ The amount of times I died when I was thinking, ‘No way this guy has his R back up,’ but they did.”
Another added, “Jungle timer was consistent but ultimate CD differs greatly between champions, they should just blanket ban these parasitic softwares.”
Others pointed out that Porofessor isn’t the first app to do this, but that did little to calm the overall sentiment.
“None of these should be allowed. It is straight-up cheating. ‘But you can already calculate the cooldown yourself’. Yeah, so do it then. Why are you using extra software if it’s so doable? None of these should be allowed in any capacity,” a player replied.
It’s unlikely that Riot will take extra steps to stop people using the app in its current form, particularly with the precedent of it being included in other addon packages.
