League of Legends patch 25.09 is the biggest update we’ve had in 2025 so far, with the main seasonal theme swapping from Noxus to Ionia and several core game mechanics shifting around. There’s a lot to take in.

Though it’s not quite as big a patch as what you’ll get for each new year, this is meant to be a huge switch-up for League of Legends at all skill levels. Everything from objectives to core systems is changing, and we don’t even know what the champion balance changes are yet.

With the focus being taken away from constant fighting on objectives and early rotations and put more toward proper laning, the way League of Legends will be played has a chance of changing completely with this update.

Systems Changes

Lane Swap Detection

  • Detection still requires there to be a jungler on the team
  • Detection is still active from 1:30 to 3:00 in top, and 1:30 to 2:15 in mid
  • Defending champion still receives all gold/xp from the lane, receives 50% less damage while under their tower in top lane, and the defending tower still receives 95% less damage while any two non-junglers are in their lane
  • Non-supports no longer receive reduced gold and XP from lane minions during lane swap detection
  • Supports in mid and top lane, when accompanied by another champion, now receive no gold or XP from lane minions and cannot consume World Atlas charges
  • 1000% increased turret damage in the top lane is now locked behind seeing two non-junglers including a support in the lane

Void Grubs

  • Only spawns once
    • Now spawns at 8 minutes instead of 6 minutes
  • Max stacks reduced: 6 >>> 3
  • Now spawns 1 mini grub at 3 stacks
    • In other words, if 1 grub gets stolen, you won’t spawn grubs at all
  • True damage to objectives reduced: 3-18 >>> 3-12
    • Still does half damage for ranged champions

Rift Herald

  • Now spawns at 15 minutes instead of 16 minutes
  • No longer has 50% damage reduction against most recent target damaged
  • Current HP bonus damage increased: 4% >>> 20%
  • Swipe AD scaling reduced: 300% >>> 125%
  • Base turret charge damage increased, but turret charge damage goes down for each tower it hits
  • Driving turn speed should be smoother and more responsive, especially early in the driving sequence
  • When driving, if you crash near an enemy turret without hitting it, the Rift Herald will attempt to perform the non-driven turret charge attack, if able

Atakhan

  • Now only has 1 form called Thornbound, Voracious and Ruinous have been removed
  • Base AD increased: 75 >>> 100
  • Ring base damage reduced: 11.5-207 >>> 10-180
  • Ring health damage reduced: 9% current HP >>> 8% current HP
  • Killing Atakhan now collects every rose on the map
    • Also increases rose XP and adaptive force by 25% permanently for your team
  • Rose XP reduced: 23 >>> 20

Champion Bounties

  • Base gold for champion kills increased: 300 >>> 300-420 (levels 6-18)

Systematic Item Changes

  • Jungle items can no longer be sold
  • Junglers can no longer buy any non-consumables until after they get their item
  • Support items can now only be purchased by supports

Summoner Spells

Ignite:

  • Damage adjusted: 70-410 >>> 70-475

Behavioral Penalties

  • Chat restrictions now apply to champion select and post-game chat, in addition to in-game.
  • In-game griefing detection for things like soft-inting or splitting and purposely throwing matches has been drastically improved to detect and punish players who are trying to hide throwing matches for their team

  • Base damage increased: 70-210 >>> 80-240

W: Incinerate

  • Mana cost reduced: 90-110 >>> 70-90

R: Summon Tibbers

  • Magic pen increased: 10-15% >>> 15-20%

Ashe

Q: Ranger’s Focus

  • AD scaling adjusted: 111-135% >>> 110-140%
  • Attack speed increased: 25-65% >>> 25-75%

Gwen

Base Stats:

  • Armor growth per level reduced: 5.2 >>> 4.9

Passive: Thousand Cuts

  • Monster damage AP scaling cap: 15% >>> 10%

Q: Snip Snip!

  • Ap scaling per snip reduced: 5% >>> 2%

Kalista

Base Stats:

  • Base health reduced: 600 >>> 580
  • Base AD reduced: 59 >>> 57
  • AD growth per level: 3.25 >>> 4

E: Rend

  • Base damage decreased: 10-50 >>> 5-45
