GTA 6 feature is now a big part of GTA Online, but not for everyone

A feature from GTA 6 may have already popped up in Grand Theft Auto Online thanks to Rockstar Games’ newest update.

It’s been well over a year since Rockstar Games released the first trailer for GTA 6, leaving the Grand Theft Auto community begging for more.

A lot of fans have already started running wild with the idea that the second trailer will drop in April. In fact, April Fool’s Day has been pointed to as the potential day of days because of a t-shirt that was added to GTA Online a while back. Though, the potential for that to be a Rockstar troll is pretty big.

That isn’t the only thing from GTA Online that has got fans excited, however. The long-await port of the Expanded and Enhanced upgrade to PC might have included a feature that we’ll see in GTA 6.

GTA 6 might look like GTA Online on PC

That feature? Ray-traced global illumination (RTGI). It was something that DigitalFoundry pointed to in their March 15 video, noting its likely been “backported” from the new game.

“The game looks a lot better on PC and the RT upgrade here is surprisingly comprehensive. In fact, it is so comprehensive that on closer examination you can see how incredibly complex it is with a lot of features and care that went into its development,” Digital Foundry’s Alex Battaglia said.

“So much care that I cannot imagine that would be the effort spent on an effect that only works on one platform in one game. I think the ray-traced global illumination in GTA 5 is, in fact, originally developed for GTA 6 in mind, which has now been backported to an older technology for this game.”

Battaglia added that the update is a “preview of the lighting and technology in GTA 6, both in terms of features we can expect and performance.”

He also noted that the new lighting matches some of the quality already seen in the GTA 6 trailer. And fans would know, they’ve dissected that trailer oh so many times.

It wouldn’t be totally shocking to see Rockstar re-use some GTA 6 plans. There has been plenty of speculation from GTA fans that they’ve been doing this already with some new cars in GTA Online.
