Xbox just unleashed an AI-powered gaming coach. It promises to help players improve, get back into old games, and game smarter – not harder.

Xbox is gearing up for a massive transformation in 2025. A new Xbox-branded handheld, codenamed Keenan, is reportedly in development and set for a late 2025 release. Meanwhile, Microsoft is working on a next-gen Xbox console expected in 2027, focusing on a PC-like experience with third-party storefront support and full backwards compatibility.

In March 13, the company announced they’re doubling down on AI-driven gaming experiences to “assist players in various ways, from personalized game recommendations and seamless game setup, to helpful coaching and maintaining connections with friends.”

Xbox integrates Copilot for Gaming, an AI sidekick designed to make your gaming life smoother.

Xbox’s Copilot will help you “get good”

Xbox Vice President of Gaming AI, Fatima Kardar, introduced it on The Official Xbox Podcast. Copilot is all about helping you get into games faster, coach you when you’re stuck, and keep your social connections strong. It’s there if you need it, invisible if you don’t.

“Gaming is the only entertainment where you can get stuck,” Kardar said. To her, that’s where you need AI to step in.

They’re not just talking about it – they’re showing it in action. In the podcast, they demonstrated Xbox’s Copilot in Overwatch. When a player wasn’t sure which hero to choose in Overwatch, Copilot stepped in. It looked at their teammates’ picks and how well they play on that map, then suggested the best hero for them.

Copilot will soon roll out to Xbox Insiders on mobile. From suggesting games it thinks you’ll love to reminding you where you left off in an old favorite, its mission is clear: get you playing with less hassle.

The AI isn’t just a glorified search bar, either. It can provide real-time coaching using natural language, offering strategic advice when you hit a wall. But don’t worry – it’s not Clippy in a new disguise. On the podcast, Kardar assures players it won’t barge into their loss-streak offering advice.

Xbox’s Copilot is a “companion experience” but not everything is set in stone. Their philosophy is “let’s have people try it and work from there,” so it’s likely it’ll undergo some changes after being implemented.

Xbox also dropped another milestone: over 1,000 titles now support Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning you can switch between your Xbox and PC seamlessly.

So, Xbox now has more AI, more cross-platform gaming, and more ways to keep you locked into its ecosystem. Whether Copilot becomes your best gaming buddy or just another ignored feature is up to you. Either way, Microsoft is betting big that AI is the future of gaming. Let’s just hope it doesn’t try to play for you.
