Avowed has four different companions who each bring something different to the battlefield. Here’s how to recruit each of them during the main story quests.
All of Avowed’s four companions are automatically recruited as the story moves forward, each of them having their own reasons for joining your quest. However, while some are recruited at the start of the game, others take a while to reach as you explore the vast world.
You can only ever have two companions with you at one time, but those not in your party will wait for you back at camp. You can still bond with every companion even when not traveling with them, as when you return to camp, each one will usually have some new dialogue about your present situation to listen to.
Here’s every companion in order and when you’ll recruit them:
Kai

Kai is a hard-as-nails mercenary with a heart of gold. He’ll join you very soon after entering Dawnshore and will accompany you on your first quest to find the ambassador.
Kai will do this because he also needs to contact that party, and because he assumes a royal envoy could do with a bodyguard. However, he soon learns you can take care of yourself.
Once you return to Paradis, events will play out that encourage Kai to remain by your side as your guide, and because he believes in your quest. Kai often serves as the voice of reason in Avowed and likes it when you make morally pure decisions.
Marius

Marius is a former friend of Kai’s and the self-appointed “best tracker in the Living Lands.” However, his boast has some merit, as Marius is a gifted survivalist and a talented marksman with a bow.
He’ll join you midway through the first hub world mains quests, so relatively early in the adventure. To recruit him, you’ll need to break up a bar fight between him and some drunks. However, you can also sit back and see how it plays out.
Marius is deeply mistrusting of others, sarcastic, and often dismissive, although, he soon grows to respect and admire the Envoy. He’ll approve of your more ruthless, pragmatic, and less forgiving deeds, often arguing with Kai about morality.
Giatta

Giatta is an animancer, practicing a forbidden magic that the Empire has outlawed. She’ll join you after you reach the game’s second major hub world and have completed the quest; The Animancy Method.
Giatta will join the party when you arrive back in Fior mes Ivèrno. This is when you’ll need to pick two of your three companions to travel with, leaving one back at camp.
In combat, she is a support mage who’ll heal and buff the party, however, you’ll need to keep her safe when combat gets tense, as she’s more of a utility companion than a warrior. Though, she can hold her own against most basic enemies.
She’ll quickly bond with the Envoy, Kai, and Marius, even helping her fellow companions mend the rift that exists between them.
Yatzli

Yatzli is the last companion you’ll recruit in Avowed and you’ll meet her almost as soon as you arrive at the Emerald Stair. However, she won’t join you as a companion until the quest A Path to the Garden as you’re leaving to go to Shatterscarp.
She and Giatta go way back, so she’ll fit right into the party, but sometimes her desire to hunt down lost and arcane knowledge will lead her into conflicts with Marius and even Kai. However, she’ll soon bond with each of them as the adventure unfolds.
Yatzli’s flirtatious nature may make some players think she’s a romance option, but this isn’t the case. She is, however, a skilled sorceress who can reign magic down on enemies from afar. If you can keep enemies from attacking her, Yatzli makes for a powerful ally.
