Warzone devs explain how they’re keeping “sweats” out of new noob-friendly mode

Call of Duty Warzone's Verdansk map and player running.

Call of Duty: Warzone devs have revealed how they’re keeping a close eye on “sweats” and making sure they’re not “wrecking” casual and noob-friendly modes.

There have been plenty of splits in the Warzone player base over the last few years. There have been arguments over keyboard and mouse vs controller, we’ve seen some players worried about ‘pay to win’ elements, and splits over what maps they believe work best.

On top of that, there has been an ever-present about casual and sweaty players. Casuals have argued that they don’t want the battle royale to feel too much like a hardcore experience, while the more dedicated players don’t want things to be dumbed down too much.

With Verdansk making a return in Season 3, that argument has cropped up again, especially as more casual players are concerned they’ll have their favorite modes ruined before ranked play is live.

Warzone devs lift lid on future of Battle Royale Casual playlist

It was something that came up during the developer’s interview with IGN, as they noted that they’re keeping an eye on “sweats” in the Battle Royale Casual playlist.

“The whole spirit of the Casual mode was to give people that were scared about getting into a time commitment or a game commitment or a skill commitment with Warzone, but do it on their terms,” Pete Actipis, game director on Warzone at Raven, said.

“The nice thing about this is, this is the first rev of it. It just went live and we’re going to look at the data, we’re going to evolve it over time to make sure it retains the design principles and spirit that we wanted it to have.

“So if we see sweats come in there wrecking the whole server, then we will have to come up with plans against that. It’s still pretty new right now. I think it’s still giving players what they need in it right now, and we’ll just keep monitoring and involving it.”

Actipis noted that it is a “fun mode” and “a little less intimidating” for those newer Call of Duty players. So, they don’t want to totally scrap it.

Etienne Pouliot, creative director at Beenox, also added: “I think it’s really important to just have those conversations with those great players and see how we can tweak that experience in a way that everyone gets something out of it.”

The Beenox boss said he is “sure” that those more skilled players are going to get in the weeds with ranked before long. “I see that as a more broad, different mode to just engaging depending on your skillset,” he added.
