There’s now an indie game on Steam that lets you race down a hill and grab a block of cheese. It’s fantastic.
Each and every year since 1826, locals have gathered at Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire, England for a…unique competition. The idea is simple. A wheel of cheese is rolling down a hill. Be the first to grab it.
What ensues is typically utter chaos as competitors tumble and spin down the steep terrain, all in hopes of getting their hands on some cheese. The absurdity of it all has attracted all sorts over the years, including the likes of IShowSpeed. One YouTuber has even won back-to-back races.
Now, you can enter the competition without having to risk life and limb. As unearthed by PCGamer, they tracked down a new indie release that makes this daring sport a virtual experience.
Cheese Rolling game is an absolute must-play
The game, simply titled ‘Cheese Rolling’, released on Steam on August 20, 2025. It seemingly comes from a solo developer with no previous titles on the platform.
While there is an offline mode available, wherein, you blitz down hills against computer-controlled opposition, the real fun is in multiplayer lobbies of up to eight players.
All eight of you start atop the hill and games go by in a flash as you all chaotically crash downhill. It’s more luck than anything, as there’s really very little control once it all gets underway.
Amusingly enough, the game even features proximity chat to really sell the hilarity of the sport. Hear another player yelling through their mic and slowly fading as they uncontrollably vault past the cheese wheel.
There’s a single skin available for purchase if you’re so inclined, and games extend across multiple maps as well. You’ll go from the iconic hillside to snowcapped mountains and even the pits of hill.
