Split Fiction boss responds to calls for a single-player game after his co-op success

Hazelight Studio boss Josef Fares has revealed that a single-player game isn’t an “impossibility” for the game devs despite their history of co-op titles.
Over the last few years, Hazelight Studio has dazzled gamers across the world with its co-op offerings. A Way Out – which followed the interesting story of two prisoners in a jailbreak – was a hit.
That was followed up by It Takes Two – which followed a couple going through some relationship troubles and being sucked into a book – which was an even bigger success. It won multiple awards in different multiplayer categories and was named Game of the Year at the The Game Awards.
Well, they’ve now got a new game – Split Fiction. It is another co-op title, placing players in the story of two authors who are writing vastly different books.
Josef Fares won’t rule out a new single-player game from Hazelight
There have been calls for Hazelight to break from their co-op formula and use their storytelling skills to make a single-player game. That is something that Josef Fares won’t rule out.
“Hazelight’s first game is actually a single-player game,” Fares told Dexerto for Fall Damage.
“Even if Hazelight will always have a co-op DNA all the time, I keep saying you never know about the future. Single-player is not an impossibility for Hazelight, but it will be done in a Hazelight way.”

That first game that the Swede refers to is Brothers – A Tale of Two Sons. It, again, has two main characters but one player controls both of them instead of it being a traditional co-op setup.
Fares also dismissed a claim that he said single-player games are “dead” now. “When have I said single-player is dead? I’ve never said that. That is total bulls*it,” he added.
Should Split Fiction prove to be a hit, we may get another co-op game from Hazelight. Though, don’t expect it to have microtransactions or lootboxes. Fares hates those.
