Initially revealed at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Phantom Blade Zero quickly drew a lot of attention thanks to its stunning graphics, fast and fluid combat, and a compelling world to explore that blends Chinese martial arts and steampunk.

To keep the hype train ticking along, developer S-Game released a new trailer in 2025 and clarified whether fans should consider the title a Soulslike or something else entirely.

A new trailer was released on January 22, 2025. The “Year of the Snake” clip gives fans a look at a gameplay recorded boss fight where protagonist, Soul, is wielding twin-snake swords to battle a large group of enemies.

The newly showcased weapons highlight Soul’s agile movements, precise strikes, and the lightning-fast speed he uses to embody the power of the snake.

The very end of the trailer also gives us a closer look at two weapons, the No. 13 Soft Snake Sword, and the No. 27 White Serpent & Crimson Viper. Judging by the numbers, we can expect an array of unique weapons for Soul to use throughout the story.

As announced during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase on May 24, viewers were given the first Phantom Blade Zero trailer, depicting brutal battles set inside a dangerous world filled with monsters and humans alike. Check it out below.

Phantom Blade Zero gameplay

At its core, Phantom Blade Zero is a hack-and-slash RPG that focuses on strategy over button-mashing. The founder of S-Game expanded on this by calling it a “‘strategic action game’, such as Soulslikes and Monster Hunter.”

It takes place in a semi-open world featuring “multiple maps of reasonable size” along with “handcrafted and populated with diverse activities, instead of one huge continuity full of repurposed/reused assets.”

On top of this, it will work on producing relatively authentic fighting techniques from kung-fu movies, bringing an element of gripping action into every scene.

Story

Phantom Blade Zero follows the protagonist, Soul, who’s a talented assassin serving the organization called ‘The Order’. The story is said to begin with Soul being framed for the murder of The Order’s patriarch.

Unfortunately, Soul is killed in the manhunt that followed, but is then resurrected by a mystic healer.

Now, with only 66 days left to live, it’s up to Soul to find the mastermind behind the framing and bring them to justice. This story description is thanks to a blog from the founder of S-Game, who details what players can expect.

Is Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike?

In a June 23, 2025, post on the game’s official X/Twitter account, the developer explained that while it bears some similarities to other genres, “Phantom Blade Zero is neither a Soulslike game nor a traditional action game.”

“Broadly speaking, it falls under the category of ARPGs, the statement continued, adding, “But more specifically – maybe it could create a new identity that is Wuxia Action Games?”
