Prior to the Microsoft acquisition, Bethesda titles launched across a wide range of hardware, attracting millions of players regardless of their platform of choice. Nowadays, however, falling under the Microsoft umbrella, that hasn’t quite been the case as various titles remain on Xbox as timed exclusives.
This is exactly what happened when Starfield finally hit store shelves in 2023, making waves as a console-exclusive on the big green machine. But could that finally be changing?
Amid a string of rumors pointing to a change in Microsoft’s overall strategy, Starfield has been linked to Sony’s hardware. So here’s what we know about a possible Starfield PS5 release in the near future.
Is Starfield coming to PS5?
Although not yet confirmed by official sources, reports indicate Starfield will indeed be coming to PS5 in the near future.
Word comes by way of XboxEra, who conveyed intel from anonymous sources inside Xbox as they claim Starfield is indeed planned to launch on PS5, and in the not-so-distant future to boot.
Phil Spencer himself chimed in on the matter in a conversation with Destin Legarie on January 25, 2025. “Can you solidify that Starfield is staying put for the time being?” Legarie asked. “No,” Spencer replied.
“There’s no specific game… there’s no reason for me to put a red fence around any game and say ‘this game will not go to any place that it would find players.’
“Our strategy is to allow our games to be playable. To keep games off of other platforms, that’s not a path for us, it doesn’t work for us.”
So while Spencer didn’t explicitly confirm when Starfield may be coming to other platforms, including the PS5, and possibly even the Nintendo Switch 2, by his account, it’s only a matter of time.
Given Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion went live on September 30, 2024, there’s every chance future ports of the game come with this DLC included, along with all the many upgrades fans have received as part of jam-packed patches and content drops since launch.
Obviously though, it’s early days yet and we don’t have a clear picture for a PS5 release just yet. Though given all the chatter, it shouldn’t be too far off and rest assured, we’ll update you here as further details emerge.
