Unlocking new armor feels great, but eventually, you’ll need to make what you already forged even better through armor upgrades in Monster Hunter Wilds.
There truly is no shortage of cool-looking attires in MHW. I’d argue that figuring out just what kind of sick armor a boss’ carcass is going to make is half the fun of this game, but I am a big video game fashion nerd, so I’m not sure my opinion counts.
In this guide, I’ll show you how to upgrade your armor with Armor Spheres, how to unlock them, and get more.
How to upgrade armor
You can upgrade armor pieces and sets you’ve already forged in the Smithy.
To do so, follow these steps:
- Speak with Gemma at any base camp.
- Select the option Forge/Upgrade armor.
- Select the armor piece you’ve already forged and want to upgrade – it should have a tick over the icon.
- Select the Upgrade option from the drop-down list.
- Add Armor Spheres until the gauge on the lower-center fills up to the max.
- Select Upgrade to commit to the changes.
When do you unlock Armor Spheres?
You start collecting Armor Spheres after defeating the Black Flame or Nu Udra. Once you clear this quest, speak with Roqul, the guy in charge of the Smelting Foundry at the Base Camp near the Azuz Everforge to learn about Smelting.
This is about 10-15 hours into the game, so you’ll have to grind a bit to get there.
How to get Armor Spheres
You can either smelt Armor Spheres at the Smelting Foundry in the Azuz Everforge or collect them by defeating monsters, starting from Ulth Duna.
Smelting Foundry

Here, you can Smelt Armor Spheres in exchange for monster parts. The rarity of the Armor Sphere coincides directly with the rarity of the monster slain to get those parts. The rarer the monster part, the more points it grants to smelt Armor Spheres.
Monster drops

You can check out the specific rewards a monster can drop by posting/joining a quest and shifting to the rewards tab by pressing E or R1/RB.
For instance, completing the quest Sultan of the Sand (Rey Dau) can reward you with a rare Armor Sphere (blue).
That’s everything you need to know about Armor Spheres in Monster Hunter Wilds. You can also check out how to transmog your gear, passively farm materials, and change your appearance.
