Monster Hunter Wilds might have spoiled us with a Seikret that autonavigates to targets. So when we’re suddenly asked to track down the Black Flame on our own, we’re completely stumped.
It certainly doesn’t help that MHW’s maps are overflowing with information – every collectible material, roaming monster, and multi-layered terrain competing for your attention. But if you paid close attention (or didn’t skip) the cutscenes, you might have already picked up on crucial clues about this elusive beast.
Don’t worry – we listen, and we don’t judge. Here’s where you can find the Black Flame in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Black Flame location in MHW

The Black Flame is located in Area 15 of the Oilwell Basin, found at the lowest level. Follow these steps to uncover this area:
- From the base camp in the Oilwell Basin, exit through the north path under the steaming hot pipe archway, then go up the stairs.
- You’ll reach an area with a steaming hot device. Take the first right and enter the room with a crater at the center.
- Exit this room through the archway on the left, then hug the left wall as you move forward. Keep following it until you reach a cliff with waterfalls.
- Jump down and follow the stream toward the creatures ahead – this is Area 13.
- From here, turn left to enter Area 14, where the temperature rises even more.
- In Area 14, look for a narrow passage on your left – this leads into Area 15, which is the hottest zone and home to the Black Flame. As you enter, you’ll see the Black Flame lurking.
- For a quicker return, you can set up a pop-up camp in the southwestern corner of Area 15 – the Lower Strata North Campsite – to make hunting the Nu Uldra easier next time.
Good job, hunter. You’re about to beat one more beast from the big list of 29 monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds, perhaps it’s time to snap a photo to get a memento of the occasion.
