Fortnite plans to inject Battle Royale into Rocket Racing to save forgotten mode

Fortnite Jonesy Rocket Racing

Fortnite’s Rocket Racing was circling the drain. Now, Epic’s allegedly throwing in some chaos: a car-based battle royale. Buckling up won’t save you from this four-wheeled mayhem.

Rocket Racing launched in December 2023 with big expectations, but there’s no hiding that it underperformed next to other game modes. Fortnite fans flocked to Lego Fortnite and Festival instead. Rocket Racing sat in the corner collecting dust.

The numbers spoke volumes. Rocket Racing had the lowest player count of the three new modes. Creative maps regularly outperformed it. While Lego Fortnite held 50,000 concurrent players, Rocket Racing barely registered.

Its failure to perform can’t be attributed to a single factor; it’s more of a cocktail of bad decisions. Bugs plagued the launch. Long load times tested patience. Rewards felt meaningless. Worst of all, players couldn’t even see their skins while racing. In Fortnite, that’s a crime.

By October 2024, Epic stopped themed updates. No new tracks. No big changes. Just quests and cosmetics to keep it technically alive. Until March 2025, when leaks started surfacing of a complete revamp for Rocket Racing.

It’s out with Rocket Racing, in with Vehicle Royale

According to dataminer Loolo, something big is coming: Vehicle Royale. Epic added tags hinting at a car-based battle royale mode. Some suggest it could be team-based.

Mad Max meets Fortnite? Yes, please.

This could be Rocket Racing’s saving grace. Think Chapter 5 Season 3’s Wrecked season, but with full-throttle destruction. Speeding across the map, boosting, smashing, and outlasting – pure car mayhem. No more lonely lobbies. Just adrenaline and explosions.

Fans are hyped. “Like a demolition derby?! That could cook,” one player posted.

Epic has been on a mode-adding spree: Brick Life, LEGO Oyssey, and of course, Fortnite OG. This one could stick. Fortnite thrives on reinvention. A car-based battle royale might be just what Rocket Racing needs to escape irrelevance.
