Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) is the fifth-generation game engine developed by Epic Games. Development kicked off in 2018 under Tim Sweeney and Kim Libreri’s leadership, and UE5 was publicly unveiled at the Epic Online Event on May 13, 2020. It entered early access on May 26, 2021, and officially launched on April 5, 2022, with full C++ source on GitHub, breakthrough Nanite virtualized geometry, Lumen real-time global illumination, and Epic’s 5 % royalty licensing model.
