Avowed gives players a lot of opportunities to play their character in a unique way, but any self-respecting Wizard needs to get their hands on a Grimoire.
Grimoires are essentially spellbooks, giving players access to new spells (while the book is actively equipped) and reducing the cost that it would take to cast them without it.
It’s a pretty essential part of the kit if you’re planning to play an out-and-out Wizard, and it’s nice to have if you’re going for a spellblade, hybrid-style build.
Though there are plenty of upgradeable elemental Grimoires to look out for in Avowed, the ones to really look out for are Unique. These come with specific spell combinations that you can’t find anywhere else, but some are significantly better than others.
Fortunately, we’ve prepared a handy tier list with the locations of the Grimoires included, so you know exactly which ones to go for.
Avowed Unique Grimoire tier list
TIER | GRIMOIRE |
---|---|
S | Eilara’s Grimoire |
A | Anextli’s Grimoire, Auroch’s Skin Grimoire |
B | Beothel’s Grimoire, Od Caura’s Grimoire |
C | Vesrik’s Grimoire |
Our tiers explained
- S: The best Unique Grimoire in the game
- A: Very good spellbooks
- B: Situational but impressive if used correctly
- C: Underwhelming compared to the competition
As with any item in Avowed, much of the Grimoires efficacy depends on how you’re trying to build your character. As an example, you’ll want to put plenty of points into the Secrets of Rime skill node if you’re planning to pick up a Grimoire full of Frost Skills. The same would apply to Scion of Flame for Fire spells.
S-Tier Unique Grimoires in Avowed
Eilara’s Grimoire

- Location: Head to the Living Archives in Galawain’s Tusks and look for the prayer room with the altar. To the right of the altar is a chest containing the grimoire, with some other items of value.
- Spells: Spirit Lance, Pull of Eora, Freezing Pillar, Meteor Shower
Though you won’t be able to get hold of it until the latter portions of the story, Eilara’s Grimoire is the best spellbook in Avowed. Meteor Shower is the strongest AoE spell around, and you can combine this with Pull of Eora to lock enemies in place and obliterate them. Freezing Pillar and Spirit Lance are also powerful, turning the whole thing into a very compelling package.
A-Tier Unique Grimoires in Avowed
Anextli’s Grimoire

- Location: Just North of Ivona’s Threshold in Dawnshore, there is a small copse of trees. There, you will find an old camp with a skeleton corpse that can be looted to attain the grimoire.
- Spells: Fan of Flames, Arcane Veil, Grimoire Snap, Missile Salvo
Available in the first zone of Dawnshore, it’s well worth going out of your way to get hold of Anextli’s Grimoire. Though Fan of Flames can be annoying to cast because it leaves you vulnerable to attack, Arcane Veil is a very strong defensive spell to counter this. Grimoire snap is the best crowd control available at Level 5 and Missile Salvo is a solid upgrade once you hit Level 10.
Aurochs-Skin Grimoire

- Location: During the main story quest, Face Your Fears, you will come to meet Ryngrim in Shatterscarp. In the room where you do, there is a secret doorway behind the bookshelf, with a hidden switch on the bookshelf itself. Once inside, the grimoire is on the table.
- Spells: Blast of Frost, Missile Salvo, Freezing Pillar, Arcane Seal
The Aurochs-Skin Grimoire is an excellent choice for the mid-game, with much of its potential unlocked once you hit Level 10. Both Blast of Frost and Missile Salvo are strong spells, and you can snowball into Freezing Pillar at Level 15. Arcane Seal is also the best way to restore Essence quickly, and you’ll find yourself using it regularly once you hit Level 20.
B-Tier Unique Grimoires in Avowed
Beothel’s Grimoire

- Location: Purchased from Merilyn in the Market District of Paradis in Dawnshore.
- Spells: Corrosive Siphon, Arcane Veil, Parasitic Staff, Blizzard
Beothel’s Grimoire has a bit more of an unusual setup compared to many of the spellbooks in this list, but there’s still plenty to like here nonetheless. Defensive staple Arcane Veil features again, along with solid AoE spell Blizzard. The truly interesting additions are Corrosive Siphon (inflicts Poison accumulation) and Parasitic Staff (restore Essence with each hit). If you’re playing a Poison-focused Wizard, bump this up to A-Tier.
Od Caura’s Grimoire

- Location: South of The Delemgan Glade is the Pargrun Cache. The grimoire is in a chest in the barred room. To get in, head round to the side and look for the broken wall, then use a ranged weapon to attack the opening mechanism.
- Spells: Chill Blades, Ring of Fire, Returning Storm, Pull of Eora
Od Caura’s Grimoire appears, at first glance, to be a heady combination of Elemental spells from four different schools. Unfortunately, none of the spells on offer are the best in class and it feels like your output is better placed elsewhere. If you’re looking to combine as many elements as possible then it is fun to use, but there are much more effective options.
C-Tier Unique Grimoires in Avowed
Vesrik’s Grimoire

- Location: As the name suggests, Vesrik’s Grimoire can be found on the body of the deceased Ranger Vesrik. Head to the cave at Wavesculpt Hollow in the Emerald Stair, freeze the water and make your way through the linear route until you see him.
- Spells: Parasitic Staff, Arcane Veil, Bristling Frost, Ring of Fire
The only Grimoire to appear in the C-Tier features a couple of spells that feature in many of the books above, as well as two outside picks that don’t make a ton of sense if you’re looking to be as potent as possible. Bristling Frost and Ring of Fire are fun to use, but any of the spellbooks above feature immediately better offensive options.
