Avowed Ancient Soil guide: Should you choose Paradis or Thirdborn for the survivors

Avowed’s branching narrative is one of its strongest features, and players have a lot of agency when it comes to how individual quests play out.

Ancient Soil is the fifth quest in the main narrative and no exception to the rule above. As well as introducing you to the identity of the mysterious Voice for the first time, it also gives you a couple of choices to make along the way.

The first relates to your conversation with your patron God, as they offer you a mysterious and unnamed power, which you can either accept or reject. After that, Ancient Soil throws up one more major twist before the quest draws to a close.

After emerging from the ruins of Naku Tedek, it becomes clear that the overzealous Steel Garotte has attacked Fior Mes Iverno, displacing and killing its people. After you rush to their aid, you’ll come across a large group of refugees who look to you to decide their next step.

Overall, if you are trying to look out for the long-term safety of the people of Fior Mes Iverno, then the best option is to send them to Paradis. Though it isn’t the ideal solution, it’s infinitely preferable to the fate that awaits them in Thirdborn. Read on to find out exactly why.

Thirdborn is the first potential location for the survivors of the attack on Fior Mes Iverno, and on the face of things, it seems quite appealing. They would be able to continue with their pursuit of animancy in peace and without suspicion.

The unfortunate side effect here comes later, during the Shadows of the Past quest. The choice offered during that part of the narrative will lead to deaths in Thirdborn, though one option is a lot more stark in delivering that death.

The people of Fior Mes Iverno will be caught up in that, and some of the community you send there will inevitably die. Short term, they’ll be able to rebuild their lives, but events quickly unravel in Thirdborn after that.

As you’ve already spent some time in Paradis, you’ll be well aware that its citizens can be less than understanding of the presence of outsiders. As such, it doesn’t seem like the best place to send the survivors if they want a good quality of life.

They have to continue with their experiments in secret and blend in with the general populace, largely avoiding the enflamed gaze of Inquisitor Lodwyn. The big advantage here is that they’ll be far out of reach of the consequences of the events in Thirdborn.

Though they might not live life exactly as they please, their existence will remain safe for the time being.
