All Avowed background starting weapons & which should you choose

Avowed background starting weapon

Avowed drops players into Fort Northreach after a deadly attack on your ship left you, and the only other surviving crewmate stranded. What follows is a first taste of Avowed’s combat, exploration, movement, and its first major choices.

The first choice you’re forced to make in Avowed, before you meet Illara or even enter the game is how you make your character. Of course, this all depends on the class you choose, but you’re told to select the right attributes, abilities, and of course background.

The latter is vital, as it determines the weapon you start with, and the one you’ll main throughout the tutorial. So, which do you choose, what is best, and can you change that weapon later on in the game? Here’s all you need to know.

All starting weapons in Avowed

Each starting weapon is dictated by your chosen background and are as follows:

  • Arcane Scholar: Dagger
  • Court Augur: Mace
  • Noble Scion: Sword
  • Vanguard Scout: Axe
  • War Hero: Spear

You’ll find this weapon lying up against some barrels and boxes near where you first meet Garryck, your temporary companion. It’s right next to the Health Potion, so grab both and get ready for an upcoming battle.

Best starting weapon to choose

The best-starting weapon is the Sword, as it’s the most common weapon you’re likely to come across throughout the Living Lands, so it makes sense to focus on perfecting your fighting with that.

Of course, to impose fairness on the game, each weapon is pretty similar in its power and usefulness at the beginning, so it’s entirely up to you as to which background you choose and which weapon comes after it.

Can you change weapons?

Thankfully, you don’t need to tie yourself to the weapon you first come across in Avowed, as there’s plenty of opportunity to change the way you fight and what you fight with.

Avowed finding a weapon

Throughout the Living Lands, there’s a huge variety of weapons dotted about, whether they’re with merchants in the cities, on bodies in the wild, or as rewards for certain quests. Either way, if you choose War Hero but would prefer a sword then that’s entirely possible. The beginning of Avowed doesn’t dictate much about your character. You can even change your attributes and abilities for a small fee.

So, that’s all you need to know about Avowed’s starting weapons. While preparing to dive into the Living Lands, be sure to check out the best abilities to unlock early. Or take a look at the Dead Man’s Mail treasure map, Practical Pockets map, or everything you need to know about Godlikes.
