Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 2 is all about players breaking into vaults and stealing gold bars, and there is more than one way you can crack them open.

Epic Games released the official trailer for Chapter 6 Season 2: Lawless on February 18, offering a first look at three brand-new POIs, skins, and several new weapons – also including the return of dual-wield weapons – all providing a glimpse into the heist-themed season ahead.

At the heart of the Lawless season lie the vaults, so here’s everything you need to know about opening them.

How to open vaults

You can only way to crack vaults open is with Thermite. Once you’ve planted one Thermite on the door, you can either wait or use a Plasma Burst Laser or the upcoming Rocket Drill to fill up the vault gauge faster.

When you start opening the vault, the guards nearby will be alerted. You’ll have to take down a fair share of regular and alpha guards before you can quietly enter the vault.

After the initial explosion, certain parts of the vault door will fire up and you must shoot them to fill up the vault opening gauge on the upper portion of the screen.

These changes make vault-opening feel a bit more like a boss fight and less like a card stealing mechanic – so don’t expect to just waltz in.

How to find Thermite

You can find Thermite inside special outlaw chests near banks.

You can easily locate them if you place a Pulse Scanner on the ground – it’ll mark all enemies on red and chests on yellow. The turrets on the train also leave behind two Thermite if you take them down.

Inside each vault, you’ll find two blue and silver chests as well as some common ones. There’s loads of golden bars, which should come in handy to spend on the new vending machines.

Plus, two Dill Bit coins await inside. Pick them up to use them on the Black Market later on.
