Elden Ring Nightreign is a new standalone co-op experience set in the same universe as the acclaimed 2022 RPG, which borrows numerous elements from other FromSoftware titles.
If you’re wondering what to expect, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve compiled all our guides, tips, and coverage below to help you prepare and power through FromSoftware’s next brutal journey.
But preparation isn’t just for the Lands Between. We’ve teamed up with Credit One Bank to help you get ready for more than just boss fights. Whether you’re stepping back into Limgrave or embarking on your next financial journey, Credit One Bank is here to help you prepare for what’s ahead.
In a first for the studio, Nightreign eschews many of the RPG elements it has become known for with Dark Souls and Bloodborne, focusing instead on survival gameplay with a twist.
Drawing obvious inspiration from battle royales and roguelikes while retaining the methodical combat and rock-hard difficulty it has become synonymous with, Nightreign is FromSoftware’s most experimental title to date.
Elden Ring Nightreign release date
Elden Ring Nightreign was released on May 30, 2025, for PlayStation and Xbox consoles as well as PC.
FromSoftware previously held a Network Test for Nightreign on January 10, 2025, providing participants with access to an unfinished build of the co-op experience.
Is Nightreign on Game Pass?
No, Elden Ring Nightreign is currently not available on Xbox Game Pass. It’s worth noting that as of May 2025, no FromSoftware titles are available through the service, and the original Elden Ring has never been available through Game Pass. Never say never, but it’s unlikely Nightreign will break that trend.

What is Elden Ring Nightreign?
Elden Ring Nightreign is a standalone co-op spin-off of Elden Ring set in the Lands Between. While both share the same fundamental combat system, the former introduces new mechanics in the form of character abilities and special attacks.
Likewise, instead of a persistent open world to explore, each run in Nightreign lasts just a handful of in-world days, with the available area shrinking each day (think Fortnite and Apex Legends) until a boss is defeated, resetting the playspace.
Should death claim you and your comrades, you’ll return to the Round Table hub to rest, recoup, and try again. Permanent unlocks carry over between runs, but you’ll need to level up anew on each fresh start.
You’re free to fly solo when visiting Limveld – previously Limgrave – or take on its dangers as a trio.
Characters
Players can choose from eight unique characters, each of which has their own passive abilities, signature skills, and ultimate arts.
- Wylder: A versatile melee fighter using grappling hooks and explosive spikes to close gaps and disorient enemies.
- Guardian: A shield-bearing tank whose abilities lift enemies, deflect projectiles, and protect allies with a magic circle.
- Ironeye: A tactical archer who marks weak points and fires supersonic arrows that pierce through all obstacles.
- Duchess: A stealthy rogue who can repeat her last attack for bonus damage and cloak her team for repositioning or ambushes.
- Raider: A brute who ignores stagger and summons a massive gravestone that blocks projectiles, damages enemies, and boosts allies.
- Recluse: A chaotic spellcaster who channels elemental traits from allies and enemies to cast devastating magic. Her ultimate marks foes to enable team healing and mana regen on hit.
- Executor: A mysterious warrior who wields two katanas. One of these can be used to deflect attacks in a mechanic reminiscent of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
- Revenant: A powerful user of Sorcery and Incantations, Revenant’s abilities focus on buffing and protecting allies.
Regardless of character choice, if you’ve played previous Souls games, combat will feel immediately familiar, albeit with a few caveats.
FromSoftware has added a new suite of movement mechanics to help you navigate Limveld more quickly, such as vaulting and even gliding. While its difficulty is as punishing as you’d expect from the developer, there are also options to revive downed teammates so they don’t lose their progress in your session.
Limveld
Once a god-blessed kingdom, Limveld is now a crumbling land devoured by darkness. As a Level 1 Nightfarer, you’ll be dropped into this nightmare with one goal: defeat the terrifying Night Lords before it’s too late.
Each expedition into Limveld is different. The layout, enemy placements, loot, and event triggers change with every run. Expect enemy ambushes, meteor strikes, volcanic eruptions, and toxic forests that punish unprepared players. Survival requires adaptation.
As the sun sets each day, the playable zone shrinks, and enemy forces grow more aggressive. Powerful enemies emerge, pushing you into more dangerous territory. Every decision, whether to search for loot, infiltrate a base, or take on a roaming boss, eats into your limited window of safety.
New bosses
At the end of each expedition, players will confront a Night Lord, a near-godlike boss with tremendous power and complex patterns. These battles are the culmination of everything you’ve gained during the run: skills, gear, relics, and strategy.
Roundtable Hold

After each run, players return to the Roundtable Hold, a hub where Nightfarers prepare for the next descent. Here, you can:
- Equip Relics, which modify abilities, stats, and even skill behavior
- Spend Murk, the game’s currency, at a jar merchant’s bazaar
- Use the Fitting Mirror to unlock new costumes and change your appearance
Some costumes are more than cosmetic. As you recover memory fragments, you’ll begin to uncover the lost pasts of the Nightfarers, unlocking new objectives and lore that explain how these warriors came together, and what drives their battle against the darkness.
Connection to Dark Souls
In an interview with Famitsu, Elden Ring Nightreign’s director, Junya Ishizaki, revealed that Elden Ring Nightreign is set in a parallel world to the original Elden Ring and that the Shattering War caused a fracture in reality that spun off into multiple universes.

This narrative explanation has given the development team room to reintroduce enemies and bosses from previous FromSoftware games. The Centipede Demon and Nameless King, introduced in Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3, respectively, were confirmed to appear in Nightreign’s gameplay trailer.
As of writing, it’s unclear if the presence of these characters has any bearing on a shared multiverse theory or if this is simply a gameplay design decision.
