After months of waiting, Maleficent can finally be added to your Valley thanks to the Storybook Vale: The Unwritten Realm update. But getting her isn’t easy.
Alongside the regular updates and now two DLCs, Disney Dreamlight Valley is no stranger to adding a few highly anticipated characters to your adventure. Whether it’s Peter Pan, Flynn Ryder, Alice, or Merida, there’s always a new character coming to DDV.
However, they don’t instantly join your world when they’re released. No, you have to work for them by completing quests, cooking up meals, mining gems, and sometimes completing a few tricky puzzles. Such is the case for Maleficent, who’s been on the horizon since the Storybook Vale expansion released. So, here’s how to unlock her.
How to unlock Maleficent
Complete the Storybook Vale main quests
The main storyline of Storybook Vale is that you’re attempting to get Hades and Maleficent to see the error of their ways. Hades is pretty easy to help, but Maleficent requires you to reach her castle in order to speak with her.
This is only done through the main quest. If you’ve already completed this in the first part of the storyline, then skip to the next step. If not, check out our guide for all the main quests in Storybook Vale.
Head to the Unwritten Realms
After completing a Storm of Stories, you’ll be able to speak to the Lorekeeper, who will ask you to complete a page detailing where Maleficent is.
They’ll explain that she’s in the Unwritten Realms, leaving you to solve a puzzle to open the realm, just like you did with the Net. Press the levers until you make the face of Maleficent. As a hint, she’ll be facing you when the puzzle is complete. It should look like the image below.

With that, interact with the giant page and head inside to find Maleficent.
Find Maleficent’s ripped up ticket
Head up the stairs and you’ll discover Maleficent, who seems to be getting pretty frustrated with some feather quills. Speak to them and you’ll quickly understand why.
Thankfully, instead of waiting five eons, you can manipulate the numbers on the puzzle to read Maleficent’s number. You’ll find the pieces in the following places:
- To the far left of the waiting room.
- Opposite where you found the first, by the orange lamp.
- Behind the feather quill.
With them all, line them up in your inventory and put in the numbers: 9375. Then, head back to the Quill, who will direct you to the Processing Room.
Solve Maleficent’s First Anchor Moment
This puzzle’s pretty tricky. So you can either go through it yourself, lining up the stone heads so they all point up, then using the images, or you can check out the image below.
If you want to solve it yourself, then we’ll offer this hint. The skull with eye patches aren’t there, so they don’t need to be put on the board. Focus on what is there rather than what isn’t.
If you’re struggling, here’s the answer:

If the image isn’t loading or you can’t see it, it’s the following:
Skull | Dragon | Skull |
Dragon | Skull | Dragon |
Skull | Dragon | Dragon |
With that, head back to Maleficent, give her the anchor, and you’ll be tasked with two more before she’s fully rescued.
Second Anchor Moment
Head up to the second floor and speak to the Magic Quill. It’ll ask you a few questions before you can continue. The answers are as follows:
- 13
- 4
- 2
If you answer those correctly, they’ll give you the spinner. Attach it to the platform and spin the cogs. You need them all to line up so the light goes through to the end. It may take a little playing around.

However, we recommend focusing on the one on the far right so they line up together, then turning them so they’re up. Then go to the middle one, spin it until the far right brings light through the three, then use the last to complete the puzzle.
Next, head inside the realm.
Move the statues
You’ll need to move both statues up to solve this puzzle. The first is Aurora.
Head to the right, break through the barriers in front of you, and make sure to activate any levers, spinners, or water mechanisms you see; they’ll move the walkway so you can get the piece for the next water mechanism. Pick this up, place it behind Aurora, and use your watering can.

Then, head to the other side for the Spinning Top. Simply dig the cups away and water the mechanism. The door will open, and you’ll get the second note.
Go to Maleficent, speak to her, and then you’re on to the third and final step.
Third Anchor Moment
The final Anchor Moment will have you going back up to where you got into the second, and activating the spinner up there. Go through the doors to the left of the portal you just went into.
Once you go through, spin the wheel and speak to the Magic Quill. They’ll refuse to let you help unless you can grab the portal.

Head to the tornado and fish up the Portal using your rod. Then, in you go.
When you’re inside, all you need to do is move the weapon racks so the knight can go through. Follow the steps below for each stage:
Stage 1

- Push the furthest weapon rack to the right.
- Push the next weapon rack to the right.
- Push the Knight.
Stage 2

- Push the furthest weapon rack to the left.
- Push the other horizontal rack to the right.
- Push the Knight.
Stage 3:

- Push the two weapon racks on your right towards the Knight.
- Push the remaining two weapon racks towards the others.
- Move the Knight.
Then, head through the door and grab the page. With that in hand, head back to Maleficent and meet with a rather distressed Quill.
They’ll explain that the Lorekeeper needs you to erase Maleficent. It’s up to you whether you choose to or not, but given you’re reading this guide, you’ll probably want to keep her around (she’ll stay regardless of what you choose).
With that, head back to Storybook Vale and speak to the Lorekeeper. They’ll act a little mysterious, but you’ll be able to add Maleficent to your valley in the end.
Friendship level 2 quest: The Corvid Companion
Cook Chimera Skewer
Once you’ve unlocked Maleficent, you’ll be able to speak to her about her missing crow. She asks you to retrieve it for her from the Unwritten Realms.
However, her crow is a little fickle, and needs a treat before it can trust you. So, you need to make a Chimera Skewer with the following ingredients:
- Hippocampus: Found fishing white ripples in Mythopia.
- Flying Fish: Found fishing in open water in Mythopia.
- Trumpet Snail: On the ground in The Bind.
- Brussels Sprout: Growing in the Everafter.
- Stygian Mudskipper: Found fishing in gold pools in Mythopia.

With all those, head to your nearest cooking pot and cook up the Chimera Skewer. Then, speak to the Lorekeeper.
Head into the Unwritten Realms
Once you’ve spoken to the Lorekeeper, you’ll need to reopen the portal to the Unwritten Realms. To do this, remake the puzzle you used to open the portal before. The puzzle is once again Maleficent and looks like the image below.

With that done, head inside the portal and speak to the nearest Magic Quill.
Find the keys
They’ll explain that you’ll need to find three keys in order to gain access to the crow. They’re in the following locations:
- Buried in the ground: From the waiting room go up the stairs and left, look for the dirt.
- Behind some Inkies: Go across the drawbridge in the waiting room and remove the Inkies by the cabinets.
- Near some filing cabinets: Go to where you fished up the portal, by the Quill you’ll see a sparkling cabinet. Move it to reveal the key.
With all three keys, head to where you dug up the key from the ground and open the door with three locks. Go through and you’ll see a chest with the lever. With this, head back down to the waiting room and keep going to the lifted drawbridge.

Put the lever in, and you’ll see the crow.
Release the crow
To release the crow you’ll need to find a way to lower the cage as well as finding a key.
The key is found on the right hand side as you face where you just came in. Head right and break the rocks surrounding the key.

Next, go right to the back of the location, if you’re facing the crow and you’ll find a spinner to interact with. Spin it and the cage will lower.
All that’s left is to interact with the cage to unlock it, feed the crow, and bring it with you.
Craft a Luxury Corvid Perch
Then, just talk to Maleficent outside of the Unwritten Realms (she’s not a fan of going back there) and she’ll ask you to craft a Luxury Corvid Perch which needs the following ingredients:
- 15 Petrified Wood: Mined from nodes in The Bind.
- 10 Marble: Mined from nodes in Mythopia.
- 15 Mud: Found by digging the ground in The Bind and Everafter.
- Sea Monster Tooth: Found by fishing in blue or white ripples in the Everafter.

Take those ingredients, head to a crafting table and make the Luxury Corvid Perch. Place it close to Maleficents Castle and then speak to her to complete the quest.
Friendship level 4 quest: Rekindling The Fire
Find the Orb
Maleficent will discover 10 Greek Pillars lying near her castle, explaining to you that she’s been sabotaged. Use you pickaxe to destroy these, just like you would in Mythopia and speak to her again.
She’ll then task you with finding her backup Orb, whcih is ‘near the largest pond in Teapot Falls.’ This is found on the top right of the region, where you first entered the trial.

Head there and look for a buried white feather in the ground. Dig it up and speak to Scrooge McDuck to uncover where the orb lies.
Dig up the Orb
The orb was buried in The Bind, on the east side of the region, just under the stairs on the way to the Library of Lore. So, head there and use your shovel on the mound.

Once you do, speak to Maleficent, who will instruct you to pay Flynn. He’ll reveal he’s done some artwork and will get you to follow him to Mount Olympus.
Remove the ‘art’
Once you get there, you’ll find some rather… interesting drawings of Hades that the God of the Underworld doesn’t take kindly to.
So, snap a picture of the art and use your watering can to remove it from his region.
With that, you’ll need to head to Hades’ house, where Maleficent will be plotting. Luckily, you catch her in the act, so she can’t do anything evil. However, Hades kicks you out of his house, and you’re left to speak to Maleficent, who will lament at being caught and complete the quest.
Friendship level 7 quest: Collateral Damage
Speak to Remy
When you reach level seven with Maleficent, you’ll receive a letter from Remy in your mailbox. Read it and head over to his house.
Inside will be plenty of fire and a rather distressed Remy. Put them out with your watering can and speak to him.
He’ll explain that the war between Maleficent and Hades has gone too far and is affecting the villagers, meaning you need to stop it.
Speak to the Lorekeeper
Next, head back to Storybook Vale and speak to the Lorekeeper, who will suggest that you give them each a gift, pretending it’s from the other.

So, for that, you’ll need to fish Cerberus’s Chew Toy out of a pond in Mount Olympus. This is found in a golden ripple at the top of the river in the region.
Then, you need to gather the ingredients for some Feather Balm:
- Olive: Found on trees in Mythopia.
- Cape Gooseberry: On the ground in The Bind.
- Trumpet Snail: On the ground in The Bind.
- Green Beans: Purchased from Goofy’s Stall in Everafter
- Extra Salty Salt Crystal: Given to you by the Lorekeeper

Head to the nearest cooking pot and make the Feather Balm.
Speak to Maleficent and Hades
With Cerberus’s Chew Toy and the Feather Balm, head over to Hades and give him his gift. Do the same with Maleficent.
Then, head over to your house to speak to both of them. It won’t be long until they see what you’re doing, essentially getting so mad that they kick you out.
Speak to Merida to figure out how you can make the two friends again, and she’ll explain that you need to find what they have in common.
Craft a Bonfire Pit
The best way to help them talk is through a Bonfire Pit, which you’ll need to craft with the following ingredients:
- 3 Gold Ingots: Found mining rock nodes in the Sunlit Plateau, Frosted Heights, Forgotten Lands, Mythopia, and Vitalys Mine
- 10 Marble: Found mining rock nodes in Mythopia.
- 50 Stone: Found when mining any rock node.
- Coal Ore: Found when mining any rock node.

Head to your crafting table and make the Bonfire Pit. Then, head into Maleficent’s castle to show her what you’ve made. She’ll be speaking with Hades.
When they’re done, you can speak to them and find out they’ve (sort of) settled their differences. All that’s left to do is place the Bonfire Pit in The Bind, and the quest will be complete.
Friendship level 10 quest: The Two Flames United
Open Scrooge McDuck’s letter
Once you reach level 10 with Hades, Aurora, and Maleficent, you’ll unlock The Two Flames United. This will come in the form of a letter from Scrooge in your mailbox. Interact with it to begin the quest.
You’ll need to head over to Scrooge’s store and listen to him arguing with the Magic Quill. After speaking a little to the Quill, you can easily best them.
Cook Grecian Baked Fish
Next, go to Remy’s restaurant and do the same there. To get this Quill to leave him alone, you’ll need to make a Frecian Baked Fish using the following ingredients:
- Stygian Mudskipper: Fished in gold ripples in Mythopia.
- Elysian Grain: Bought at Goofy’s Stall in Mythopia.
- Olives: On trees in Mythopia.
- Ambrosia: Bought at Goofy’s Stall in Mythopia.
- Salt Crystal: Fished outside ripples in the Everafter.

With those ingredients, head to a cooking pot and cook the Grecian Baked Fish. Then deliver it to the Quill.
Lastly, go to Goofy’s home and do the same, taking a picture with the Quill this time.
Confront Hades and Maleficent
Chat with the Lorekeeper, who will reveal that Maleficent and Hades are clearly up to something terrible. It’s up to you and the rest of the Vale to stop them.
To do so, place the Dreamlight Bell Beacon and summon the Vale. Then, head into the portal and confront the Quills. After a few words, you’ll be able to get through and confront Hades and Maleficent.
After pitting them against each other, you’ll be able to water down the tornadoes to your right, stopping their plans.
Then, head down the path to the Typewriter and change their stories. With that, speak to the Lorekeeper, Hades, and Maleficent, and the quest will be over.
That’s how you can unlock Maleficent in Disney Dreamlight Valley. Be sure to check out a full recipes list, our guides on gems and fish, or even the current Star Path.
