How to unlock Joy and Sadness in Disney Dreamlight Valley & all friendship quests

It’s time to bring a little emotion to Disney Dreamlight Valley as Joy and Sadness from Inside Out have finally arrived in the valley… well, once you unlock them.

While unlocking all the recipes, mining all the gems, or completing the tricky quests and the Star Path are the best parts of DDV, nothing quite compares to unlocking all the game’s various characters, from Lion King’s Nala and Simba, to the more recent Aurora and Maleficent (if you have the expansion that is).

Well, now all players have the chance to unlock a brand new set of characters, Joy and Sadness, as part of the newest update, Emotional Rescue. So, here’s how to unlock the two emotions and add them to your Valley.

How to unlock Joy and Sadness

Open the Inside Out Realm

Before you can meet the new characters, you’ll need to unlock the Inside Out Realm. To do this, head into the Dreamlight Castle and head to the far right door on the top floor.

Then, interact with it and spend 15,000 Dreamlight to open it. With that, you’ll be able to begin the questlines.

Complete Emotional Rescue

Once you’ve interacted with the door, you’ll be met with a confused Merlin and a dull Memory Orb. It’s up to you to restore the memory so you can enter the Realm.

Cook up a joyous dish and find Night Thorns

To do this you need to cook a dish that brings you joy, and take a picture of a Night Thorn. Head outside the Castle and find your nearest cooking pot.

You’ll be directed to cook various ‘happy meals’, so select one marked by the blue quest icon and cook it up. We suggest something simple, like Apple Pie or My Hero Cookies.

Then, head outside and look for a Night Thorn. Use your camera and you’ll be ready to enter the Realm.

Help Joy fix the console

When you get inside, you’ll see a rather concerned Joy who explains that the console has broken and that they’re not able to look after Riley. Naturally, it’s up to you to find the parts and fix the problem.

The parts are in the following locations:

• Behind the left Sofa
• Behind the right Sofa
• Near the wall behind the right Sofa
• In the tunnel on the right
• By the crafting table
• By the wall near the crafting table
• By the right-hand ramp.

It’s worth noting that you’ll need four items in total, but one needs to be crafted. So, when you’re near the crafting table, head inside and create the Caution Sliders.

When you have all the items, head to the console and place the Caution Sliders, Curiosity Sliders, Envy Button, and the Curiosity Adjuster inside.

Joy will thank you and explain that there’s an issue with the long-term memories, meaning you need to fix them before Riley can remember things.

To do that, head over to the memory wall and interact with the gray pillars with the red buttons. Do so in the following order:

• Press the left button once.
• Press the right button once.

With that, the memory will be free, and you’ll be instructed to move the next sliders. To do so, follow the same steps as above.

Find the Mind Worker Safety gear

The memories will be working again, prompting Joy to ask you to look for Sadness. But before that, you’ll need to find some Mind Worker Safety gear.

This is found in the lockers on the back right of the realm. Interact with the Sadness one, so the blue raindrop, and you’ll unlock two new clothing bags.

Open them, put them on, and head over to the elevator in the middle of the Realm. Then, you’ll be onto the next quest.

Complete Out of the Blue

Once you enter, you’ll need to navigate a maze to get to Sadness. For this, we recommend keeping to the left and only solving those puzzles for the time being. It’s the shortest route.

So, head to the first set of consoles and press the following buttons:

• Left once
• Right once

Run through, go left, and keep following until you need to go left again.

When you get to the consoles, press the following buttons:

• Left once
• Right once

Find musical memories

Then you can chat with Sadness. She’ll explain that you need to find a variety of musical memories, which are marked by notes coming out of them.

The first is behind Sadness. From there, go through the opening, turn left, left again, and go straight on. Turn left, and solve the puzzle by pressing the left button once and the middle button once.

Next, head out of there, go right, right again, and then left. Then, go right and you’ll see another music note.

From there, go straight on to the next button. Press the left once and the middle once. The final memory is there.

Finally, follow Sadness, place the memories on the table, and head back to Joy. This will set you up for the next quest.

Complete Dream On!

After completing the quest, you’ll need to speak to Joy and Sadness, who will explain that they need to make a dream for Riley to inspire her for her talent show. Head into the studio next to Joy.

Create a dream set

Then, you’ll need to make a set. To do this, head into your furniture tab and look to the left of the stages. There you’ll find a collection of different items. The ones you need are:

• Globe
• Plant
• Fireplace

Move these wherever you want on the stage with the piano. Then, speak to Joy and put on three Elegant items of clothing. Simply head into your clothing tab, navigate to filters, and select Elegant. Then put on three items.

Next, speak to Joy and interact with the piano. This will teleport you back to the main control Room. It turns out the dream didn’t work, prompting you to suggest a dream a little more colorful.

Place Joy & Sadness’ house

To do this, you need to head back to the Valley and place Joy and Sadness’ home. Simply head back to your Valley, find the perfect spot, and place down the Remote Headquarters. It’ll cost you 10,000 Star Coins to build.

With that, you can welcome Joy to your Valley.

Craft a Light Stick

The quest isn’t over yet, as you still need to make the Light Stick. For that, you need the following items:

• Topaz: Mined in the Plaza
• Apple: Grows on trees in the Plaza
• Seaweed: Fished at non-ripple spots in Dazzle Beach
• Blue Falling Penstemon: Found in the Plaza
• Carrot: Grown from Goofy’s stall in the Plaza or Peaceful Meadow
• Onyx: Found in any Mining spot

Once you’ve gathered the items, head to Joy and she’ll make the Light Stick. All that’s left now, is to get Sadness in the Valley.

Complete Get up and Glow

Head back to the Inside Out Realm and speak to Sadness. She’ll explain that while you were gone, Embarrassment took control and caused a memory shake. So, it’s up to you to find some new memories for Riley, ones a little more fitting for her dreams.

Find memory orbs

Head into the Long Term Memory (where you found Sadness) and speak to her. Basically, what you need to do is find four orbs, break rocks, and align the buttons to open more walls.

Head through the first set of rocks and follow the route around to the left until you reach your first orb, which is tucked behind a rock.

Then, keep going straight, mine the rocks, and press the middle button once, then the left button once, and finally the right button. This will open the next stage.

Walk through and break all the rocks. You’ll pick up an orb here and a red button.

Next, head out and go to the next set of buttons on the right as you leave. Place the button down and press the left button once and the middle button once. Grab the Orb.

Next, go behind you, head along, and look to the right for the final Orb. Lastly, speak to Sadness who will get you to put them in the recall tube near the entrance.

Make a pop stage

With that, speak to Sadness and head to Dream Productions. The premise is much the same as it was with the piano. You need to make a pop stage using the furniture. Though this time the items you need are on the right.

Move the following:

• Both lights
• DJ Booth
• Both speakers
• Red cannon

Then, head into your wardrobe and choose Bold under the filter. Wear a Bold outfit and you’ll be ready to interact with the microphone.

All that’s left is to speak to Sadness, and she’ll eventually join your Valley after hearing the dream was a success.

Joy’s Friendship Quests

Capture the Sun

Joy’s first Friendship Quest is all about playing a game with the villagers.

The first step is to take a selfie with Joy in the edge of Peaceful Meadow, the Wishing Well in the Plaza and the inside of the Dream Castle. She’ll naturally follow you around while you visit these areas, but you can ask her to hang out just in case.

Next, invite Goofy, Donald, Vanellope, and Merlin to play the game with you two. Once you’ve rounded up all your guests, gather the materials for the Flag Poles

To craft a Flag Pole, you’ll need the following:

• 3x Yellow Daisies: Found in the Peaceful Meadow
• 10x Softwood: Found in the Plaza, Peaceful Meadow, Forest of Valor, and Glade of Trust
• 1x Topaz: Found by mining nodes in the Plaza.

When you’ve crafted everything, bring it to the Dream Castle, and take a selfie of the whole gang.

After chasing the Sun Spheres all over the Castle, bring them to your flag pone (the one at the center), and you’ll be done with Joy’s first friendship quest.

Mood Swings

Joy’s second Friendship quest is closely tied to Sadness’ first friendship quest, so you’ll have to complete that before unlocking it. The quest itself is all about helping the villagers who just played Flag Pole with you feel a little better.

Help Donad

First, meet with Donald in his house. You’ll need to equip your pickaxe and break his couch, his table (the one next to his bed), and his bookcase (next to the plant).

Help Merlin

Next, meet with Merlin in the Dreamlight Library. Here, you’ll have to clean up the Spider Webs (3) and grab the Nondescript Potion Bottles lying around, and bring them to the shelf on the southwest corner of the library, right behind some books.

Joyful Meal recipe for Vanellope

To make a Joyful Meal in Disney Dreamlight Valley, get the following ingredients

• Wheat: Buy Wheat Seeds from Goofy’s Stall in Peaceful Meadow.
• Blueberries: Harvest from Blueberry Bushes in Dazzle Beach and Forest of Valor.
• Raspberries: Harvest from Raspberry Bushes in Peaceful Meadow and Plaza.
• Banana: Found in Banana trees in Peaceful Meadow.

Once you’ve prepared it, bring it back to Vanellope to try and cheer her up.

Shiny New Fishing Rod recipe for Goofy

Dexerto

To craft a Shiny New Fishing Rod for Goofy, you’ll need the following ingredients:

• Softwood: Found in Plaza, Peaceful Meadow, Forest of Valor, or Glade of Trust
• Fiber: Craft ftom Seaweed, which is obtained via fishing
• Iron ingot: Crafted from 5 Iron Ore and 1 Coal Ore
• Tinkering Parts: Crafted from 2 Iron Ingots

Bring the rod back to Goofy and test it out for him.

An interesting fish in the large pond in the Peaceful Meadow

Head to the large pond in the Peaceful Meadow, the one nearby the exit toward Dazzle Beach. Here, look for some golden ripples and cast your reel there to find the Plush Bear Thread and conclude this quest.

Imagination Land

Joy’s level 7 friendship quest is all about making the Forgotten Lands look pretty.

Find the Forgotten Lands Biome Plans

Pay the Fairy Godmother a visit. You’ll find the Forgotten Lands biome plans behind her sofa, just lying on the floor.

The next step will be to put out some of the green fires and clear out the Night Thorns in this area. If you run out of Night Thorns to clear, you’ll just have to wait until more of them spawn.

Land Arch recipe

You’ll need:

• 3 Topaz: Found by mining in The Plaza.
• 10 Dark Wood: Found by foraging in the Forgotten Lands.
• 2 Yellow Nasturtium: Found in the Forgotten Lands.

Once you’ve got all that loot, head to your crafting station and build that Imagination Land Arch.

Sunflower Pots recipe

You’ll need:

• 10 Sunflowers: Found in Dazzle Beach.
• 20 Yellow Daisies: Found in Peaceful Meadows.
• 10 Flower Pots: Crafted at a crafting station.

Use these ingredients at a crafting station and take your decorations to the Forgotten Lands for a selfie. Then, clean up the Night Thorns and grab the Brown Plush Bear Yarn.

Dream a Little Dream

This is Joy’s last friendship quest. Let’s get started by vising the Inside Out Realm.

Find materials for the Dream Production

The materials you need for the Dream Production are in the inside Out realm’s recording studio, mostly.

• Dream Camera: Found next to the stage.
• Pot of Green Paint: Found next to the camera
• Spotlights: Given to you by Joy.
• Dream Documentation: Found outside of the recording studio (in the realm’s control room, by some puple shelves)

Give all these items to Joy, and she’ll request you craft a special lens.

Camera Lens Filter

You’ll need the following gems for this recipe:

• Topaz: Mine rock spots in the Plaza and Peaceful Meadow.
• Amethyst: Found in mining nodes in the Forgotten Lands and Frosted Heights.
• Emerald: Mine in the Forest of Valor and Glade of Trust.
• Garnet: Pops up in the Plaza and Peaceful Meadow.
• Ruby: Only in the Vitalys Mines (Sunlit Plateau).
• Sapphire: Also exclusive to the Vitalys Mines.
• Tourmaline: Spawns in the Frosted Heights and Sunlit Plateau.

The next step now is to place the filming equipment in the secret chamber. Then, recruit The Forgotten (whom you’ve named in the previous update) to play the main role. And finally, use some glass, craft 3 Light Bulbs.

Find the right mood for the start, middle, and ending of the scene

With the colored buttons next to the stage, you can set the stage’s lightning. Here’s the correct color for each scene:

• Start scene: Yellow lightning
• Middle scene: Blue lightning (make sure the other switches are off)
• End scene: Purple lightning (red + blue)

After recording, a Yellow Plush Bear Yarn will appear. This concludes all of Joy’s Friendship Quests.

Sadness’ Friendship Quests

You can start Sadness’ first friendship quest by finishing Joy’s first quest, Capture the Sun.

Storm’s A-Brewing

Kick off Sadness’ Storm’s A-Brewing quest by speaking to her in her and Joy’s house. She’ll ask that you take a picture of the indoor rain clouds at either Chez Remy’s, Scrooge McDuck’s store, and the Dream Castle.

The next step will be to collect 10 blue flowers for Sadness; it doesn’t matter which as long as they’re blue.

This, unfortunately, doesn’t cheer her up, but she suggest crafting a few items:

Crying Eye Glasses recipe

Here’s everything you need to craft the Crying Glasses in DDV:

• 4x Softwood: Found in Plaza, Peaceful Meadow, Forest of Valor, or Glade of Trust
• 5x Sand: Found by digging shiny sparkly spots on beaches like Dazzle Beach
• 5x Night Shard: Found by digging sparkling holes in any biome with your shovel.

Tissues Box recipe

Here’s everything you need to craft 3 Tissues Box in DDV:

• 3 Softwood: Found in Plaza, Peaceful Meadow, Forest of Valor, or Glade of Trust
• 2 Fiber: Craft ftom Seaweed, which is obtained via fishing

Once crafted, give the Tissues back to Sadness and equip the Crying Glasses.

Take care of the rain clouds

The next step is to head to Remy’s restaurant, Scrooge’s Store, and the Dream Castle, to take care of all rain clouds in those areas. Just interact with them and they’ll be gone.

Find a rain cloud in the Valley and take a picture of it

Finally, spot a rain cloud in the Valley. Though Sadness’ instructions are quite vague, you’ll likely find the rain cloud in the Plaza. I found mine pretty close to the Plaza’s Well.

Report back to Sadness, and she’ll ask that you upgrade your watering can to dissolve the clouds. I found the other three pretty close by in the Plaza as well.

This marks the end of Sadness’ first friendship quest.

The Fortress of Saditude

To start Sadness’ second friendship quest, you’ll need to finish Joy’s second one.

This quest starts with you taking pictures of Scrooge McDuck’s Store, Merlin’s Library, and your house to see if they’re a good match for the Cozy Pillow Fort.

Sadness Cozy Pillow Fort recipe

Here’s what you’ll need to progress this quest:

• 8 Blue Star Lily: Found in Forest of Valor.
• 8 Blue Marsh Milkweed: Found in the Glade of Trust
• 3 Aquamarine: Found in Plaza, Peaceful Meadow, and Forest of Valor.
• 8 Blue Hydrangea: Found in Dazzle Beach.
• 20 Softwood: Found in Plaza, Peaceful Meadow, Forest of Valor, or Glade of Trust
• 10 Donald Fallen Feathers: Found in the ground of the Plaza and Peaceful Meadow.

Report back to Sadness once you’ve got all the materials to craft the Sadness Cozy Pillow Fort in DDV.

Get the villagers’ pillows

• First, place the Cozy Pillow Fort anywhere in the Valley. Now it’s time to track down those missing pillows.
• Start with Scrooge McDuck. You won’t find his pillow in the shop, so talk to him directly and order it.
• Next, head to Dazzle Beach and keep an eye out for golden ripples in the water. That’s where you’ll fish up Goofy’s pillow.
• Finally, drop by WALL-E’s house and smash the trash cube inside to uncover the last pillow.

Once you’ve got them all, bring the pillows back to the fort. Place them together and you’ll unlock the Plush Bear Stuffing, completing the quest.

The Big Worry

For Sadness’ level 7 friendship quest, you’ve got to help the Villagers feel a bit better with one of Sadness’ talking sessions. Invite Elsa, WALL-E, The Beast, Remy, and Mickey Mouse. Then, prep some comfort food for your guests.

Gooseberry Boba Tea recipe

To make this meal, you’lll need the following ingredients:

• Milk: Buy from Remy’s restaurant.
• Sugarcane: Grab it at Goofy’s stall on Dazzle Beach.
• Gooseberry: Forage in Forgotten Lands or Frosted Heights.

Margherita Pizza recipe

To make this meal, you’ll need the following ingredients:

• Wheat: Buy seeds at Goofy’s stall in Peaceful Meadow and grow them, or occasionally purchase fully grown wheat.
• Tomato: Sold as seeds or crops at Goofy’s stall in Dazzle Beach.
• Cheese: Purchase directly from Remy’s restaurant.
• Basil: Forage wild basil growing in the Peaceful Meadow biome.

Tissues Box recipe

Here’s everything you need to craft a Tissues Box in DDV:

• 3 Softwood: Found in Plaza, Peaceful Meadow, Forest of Valor, or Glade of Trust
• 2 Fiber: Craft ftom Seaweed, which is obtained via fishing

Give all these items, plus 12 Fabric, 16 Softwood, and 8 Passion Lilies, to Sadness once you’re done and attend her talk in her and Joy’s house.

Plant the Big Worry

After the conversation, a Big Worry sphere will spawn in the center of the room. Pick it up, plant it, water it, and harvest it to proceed.

Sad Rain clouds locations

Finally, water 12 sad rain clouds in the Eastern Biomes: Peaceful Meadows, Plaza, Dazzle Beach, Frosted Heights, and Forest of Valor. They’re randomly placed, but you should be able to find more than enough clouds floating around.

Report back to Sadness to finish this quest.

Create a Bear

This is the final friendship quest for Sadness. Let’s start by finding some Memory Fragments.

Memory Fragment locations

Here’s where you can find every memory fragment:

• Outside somewhere you feel at home: right outside of your house
• A place that connects many worlds: on the top floor of the Dream Castle
• Where Joy and Sadness control emotions: In the Inside Out realm, by the shelves where you found the documentation.

Place all of the fragments in the console.

How to rearrange your memory

You’ll be able to rearrange your memory by interacting with the left, center, and right parts of the console. Each corresponds with a part of the screen, which should tell a story.

Mine is about how I showed the teddy bear to someone I cared about, they laughted, and thus the teddy bear was destroyed. The story on the screen should reflect this anecdote as shown on the picture.

The next steps will be to put the bear back together.

• 5 Diamond: Mine in the Forgotten Lands and Frosted Heights.
• 5 Emerald: Mine in the Forest of Valor and Glade of Trust.
• 5 Tourmaline: Spawns in the Frosted Heights and Sunlit Plateau.
• 50 Cotton: Buy seeds from Goofy’s stall in the Sunlit Plateau and grow them

Plush Bear Framework recipe

• 30 Realm Shards: Dropped randomly when clearing Night Thorns or completing quests.
• 10 Purple Impatiens: Forage in the Forgotten Lands.
• 10 Yellow Nasturtium: Forage in the Forgotten Lands.
• 50 Fiber: Craft from Seaweed, which you can fish from ripple-free water spots.

With these two new items and what you’ve found during Joy and Sadness’ friendship quests, you’ll be able to craft the New Comfort Bear. Place it somewhere in the Valley and celebrate to wrap up this quest.
