Disney Dreamlight Valley new companion friendship system explained

Disney Dreamlight Valley Companion Parrot

Disney Dreamlight Valley has finally added more to do with your companions. Now, instead of them just mindlessly following you around, you can utilize these adorable critters, gain rewards, and of course, level them up.

The Mysteries of Skull Rock update introduced a variety of new content, from the highly anticipated solution of (you guessed it) the mystery behind Skull Rock to the addition of Peter Pan. On top of this, The Forgotten will finally be able to become a friend, and you’ll now be able to change their name, which is fitting… no one wants to be called The Forgotten.

Moreover, there are new companion features that are already capturing the hearts of fans, including leveling up, unlocking rewards, and other perks. So, here’s all we know about the new companion friendship mechanic.

Companion friendship levels explained

As revealed in the update announcement, companions will now have friendship levels. If you pet them and hang out with them, then their friendship levels will increase, just like the traditional characters you meet around the Valley.

Petting them and performing tasks will increase their friendship levels, so be sure to hang out with your favorite as you interact with forageables, dig, mine, and do other tasks in the Valley while you complete the new Star Path.

All companions & their rewards

On top of this, different companions will collect specific resource types, like characters do when they have specific training.

We’ve listed all the companions by species and what they’ll offer you on your adventure.

How to rename companions

Along with the new rewards and leveling mechanic, you can now rename your favorite unnamed companions.

As we mentioned, they’ll have to be unnamed. If they are, follow the steps below to rename your chosen animal:

  1. Open the Wardrobe, pick the Companion category, and select your companion.
  2. You’ll spot a tiny button on the bottom left prompting you to change their name.
    • On PC, this is N.
    • On PlayStation, this is the Touchpad.
  3. Pick a name, write it down, and then confirm it.

All notable companions

If you own a named companion, like Max, then you won’t be able to rename them, unfortunately. However, some will offer special rewards when you reach max level with them, so be sure to keep an eye out.
