Diablo 4 players scratching their heads as major faction just disappears

Diablo 4 Inarius

Diablo 4 is yet to check in on the Angels of the High Heavens and fans are beginning to find this odd after they were such a major part of earlier games.

While the world of Diablo 4 is often attacked by the forces of Hell, its opposite, Heaven also exists in the series, yet apart from Inarius, the Angels have been silent since the game came out. While the Angels have often been aloof, and even hostile towards humanity throughout the Diablo games, Diablo 3 saw them form an alliance with Sanctuary to battle Diablo and his forces.

The joint human and Angel army liberated Heaven from Hell and the allies then went on to defeat Diablo. In the Reaper of Souls expansion, Malthael, the Angel of Death would try to exterminate humanity but was himself defeated by the protagonists. However, since then, the faction hasn’t been heard from.

While the Angels are likely rebuilding after Diablo’s attack, even humanity’s guardian, the Arch Angel Tyrael hasn’t been seen in Diablo 4 yet. This is especially strange, as Tyrael elected to remain in human form to help them against Diablo, but even when Lilith returned, he was nowhere to be seen.

Even during the end of Diablo 4, Inarius, who the Angels consider a traitor, called out to Heaven and was ignored. Now this may have been due to the Angels having no desire to speak to him, or it could be a sign of something much more sinister – the Angels may all be gone.

Where are the Angels in Diablo 4?

On Blizzard’s own forums, Diablo 4 players wondered where the faction has gone, finding it strange that they’ve had no screentime since the third game, with one posting, “C’mon, stop making the Angels cower and make them leave High Heavens to resume the Eternal Conflict against the Burning Hells. Angels are too vagabond and sleeping too much; that’s enough, wake up! Hi, Tyrael, where is Tyrael?”

The Eternal Conflict is the the battle between Heaven and Hell which sees Sanctuary and humanity caught in the middle. The world of humans was created by Inarius and Lilith to be a place where they could escape the conflict, but it followed them, leading to the pair declaring war on both Angels and Demons.

Another player supported the original poster, saying, “I agree! More angels would be fun. What’s going on in High Heavens?” While another theorized that the Angels are staying away from Sanctuary after Heaven was invaded by Diablo.

They said, “I assume they are still licking their wounds. They lost Mathael – doubtful that another Aspect of Wisdom reformed yet I guess. Also, we don’t know what’s [going on] with Tyrael – is he still angelic? Does he age? Is he really a “human”, or just an Angel stripped of a lot of his powers? The Tyrael part is something that they carefully need to pay attention to if they want to evolve the story.”

Finally, one player suggested that the Angels could be dead, corrupted, or dealing with a much more pressing concern than the fate of mortals, saying, “Angels are birthed from the Crystal Arch, who knows how much Diablo corrupted it… Many Angels died, maybe they have bigger problems now.”

Blizzard is likely holding back on the Angels in Diablo 4 for a reason, with them perhaps planned to return in some form in a future season or expansion. Until then, players can only ponder what’s going on in the High Heavens.
