Destiny 2Destiny 2 has confirmed it’s getting an officially licensed Star Wars expansion, featuring iconic weapons and vehicles from the series. Yes, even lightsabers.
The fate of Destiny 2 has been uncertain since The Final Shape wrapped up, but Bungie has made it clear they’re not anywhere close to finished with creating new content for the long-running looter shooter title.
However, rather than taking inspiration from something like Star Wars, they’re going all-in and just licensing the series. Sith Lord Exotics? Why not?
Rather than sticking in the Destiny universe, the Guardians are going straight to a galaxy far, far away with the Renegades expansion.
Destiny 2’s Renegades expansion brings Star Wars theme
While this Expansion doesn’t have any actual Star Wars characters in it (that we know of, at least), they showed off a ton of new information in the span of just a short trailer.
The most notable thing aside from the setting and weapons here is the fact that there’s a Stormtrooper lying on the ground. Does this mean we’ll get to fight them? Hard to say, but it’s the only acknowledgment of actual Star Wars lore here besides stuff the player can pick up.
Additionally, characters can be seen posing with Blasters, making it a likely weapon type for the new expansion. It’s not clear if this will fit in with the typical hand cannon/sidearm categories that are already in the game, or if they’ll take up a new weapon archetype due to being a beam weapon.
And, of course, we’ve got lightsabers. It’d be no surprise to see these be an Exotic weapon type, and they’ve even got the iconic sound from the original films.
Outside of that, though, not much is known about the expansion. It’s not clear how, if at all, this will loop Destiny 2 into the Star Wars universe outside of just featuring some iconic locales, items, and costumes that pay homage to some of the series’ most beloved characters. Even if it’s not clear whether or not Darth Vader will be a part of the story, his armor is confirmed to be attainable.
After all, the brief bit at the end of the trailer alludes to getting your hands on a real podracer, the contraption many of Destiny 2’s vehicles are based on.
This was announced alongside the Edge of Fate expansion, a big paid content update that’ll be coming to Destiny 2 on July 15. Renegades won’t be out until December 2 and will also be a paid expansion, so Star Wars fans will have to wait a bit until they’ll be able to get their hands on a Lightsaber of their own.
Additionally, this expansion has a hefty price tag on it. Buying the full Year of Prophecy that includes the Edge of Fate DLC and some other goodies along with Renegades is $100 USD, and with the Edge of Fate expansion costing $40 on its own.
With that in mind, Renegades will be at least $40 on release to buy on its own, though it may cost more than that later on.
