Best Destiny 2 DLC to buy

If you’re a new player looking for the best experience possible, we recommend buying The Edge of Fate.

This gives you access to the latest campaign, one raid, new weapons, Exotics, and serves as an excellent entry point for new players who are perhaps overwhelmed by years of content updates.

The Edge of Fate + Year of Prophecy

The Edge of Fate is Destiny 2’s first expansion of 2025 and the first since the conclusion of the looter shooter’s 10-year Light and Darkness saga.

Players visit the remote planet of Kepler on the outer reaches of the solar system to investigate The Nine, mysterious extradimensional beings. For $39.99, you’ll get full access to the expansion’s campaign, its respective Rewards Pass, and a new raid, The Desert Perpetual.

For the admittedly much higher price point, picking up the $79.99 Year of Prophecy bundle will get you access to everything included in The Edge of Fate as well as Renegades. The latter is Destiny 2’s second 2025 expansion, launching December 2.

The Final Shape + Annual Pass

The Final Shape was the main Destiny 2 expansion of 2024, which concluded the Light & Darkness Saga with a final clash against The Witness. This particular offering is the definitive version of the DLC that includes the campaign, all of the episodic content from Echoes, Revenant, and Heresy, plus both of this year’s dungeons – Vesper’s Host and Sundered Doctrine.

While fairly pricey at $99.99 USD, this is a great expansion to buy as it includes a sizable chunk of the best content available in the game right now. From its sensational storytelling to gameplay-defining Exotics, there’s a lot on offer that will keep you occupied for some time.

Legacy Collection (2024)

In the Legacy Collection, you gain access to most of the content from several past expansions: Lightfall, The Witch Queen, Beyond Light, Shadowkeep, Forsaken, and 30th Anniversary Pack.

This includes over 50 Exotics, both the Strand and Stasis subclasses, four campaigns, three dungeons, and a practically endless amount of content to play through. However, you won’t get the four dungeons from Lightfall and The Witch Queen, as these are sold separately as Dungeon Keys.

Picking up the Legacy Collection and The Final Shape + Annual Pass is the definitive way for new Guardians to dive into several years’ worth of content and be fully up-to-date for any future chapters in Bungie’s looter shooter. You get access to almost everything substantial in one fell swoop.

The Light & Darkness Collection

If you want to go all in on Destiny 2 and are convinced it is a game you will be playing for years to come, the Light & Darkness Collection is the ultimate option that includes just about everything on offer. With this bundle, you get all of the items from both The Final Shape + Annual Pass and Legacy Collection (2024).

Bizarrely, you still don’t get either The Lightfall Dungeon Key or The Witch Queen Dungeon Key, so you’ll have to purchase them separately if you want to play the four associated dungeons. Ideally, you’d want to buy these on sale, but if not, they will set you back a further $40 on top of this bundle’s retail price of $149.99 USD.

Otherwise, purchasing this gives you access to everything currently available in Destiny 2, so you won’t have to worry about buying more DLC down the line. Well, not until the next expansion is released anyway, which is called Frontiers and is being released in Summer 2025.

What’s included in each Destiny 2 DLC?

The Edge of Fate

Destiny 2’s first expansion following the conclusion of the Light and Darkness Saga sees Guardians confront a new threat, The Nine. Enigmatic, extradimensional beings, players visit Kepler on the edge of the solar system to uncover secrets and confront the Vex in the Desert Perpetual raid.

The Final Shape

It’s time to finish the fight and take down The Witness once and for all in this epic story that finally concludes the Light and Darkness Saga. You can also look forward to the Salvation’s Edge raid, Vesper’s Host dungeon, three fully featured episodes, and much more.

Lightfall

Visit Neptune to protect the people of Neomuna and discover how to use Strand, a mysterious power of Darkness that bends to your will. While you’re here, perhaps you will learn more about The Witness’ goals before it’s too late.

Shadowkeep

This expansion brings the Moon destination while having guardians confront the nightmarish “phantoms” of familiar foes. You get things like The Garden of Salvation raid, the Pit of Heresy dungeon, and more included.

Beyond Light

The excellent Beyond Light campaign takes place on the frosty moon of Europa. Here you unlock the darkness-powered Stasis subclass for new build options and ice powers. It adds the Deep Stone Crypt raid, new strikes, a new destination, expansive Exotic quests for both Salvation’s Grip and The Lament, and much more.

The Witch Queen

Destiny 2’s The Witch Queen expansion adds the Throne World destination, introducing Weapon Crafting so you can perfect your favorite guns, the explosive glaive weapon type, an unrelenting raid in Vow of the Disciple, and most importantly, an intensely satisfying campaign against Hive ruler Savathûn. It’s a must-play for the cinematic story alone.

Lightfall

The most recent expansion has you face off against nightmarish forces threatening a stunning cyber city on Neptune called Neomuna. It adds the Strand subclass, which utilizes threads and grappling hooks for unique traversal and crowd control builds. The campaign sees the return of Emperor Calus as a villain. It also includes a new destination to explore, weapons, raids, dungeons, and a reprised classic raid – Crota’s End.

What is Vaulted Content?

Bungie will sometimes “vault” Destiny 2 by removing it from the game. Currently, this includes the original campaign, Forsaken, and some other older additions.
