For a brief period of time, Destiny 2 were able to access Rite of the Nine content that’s not supposed to launch until Heresy Act 3.
Announced during Bungie’s March 4 livestream, Rite of the Nine is an event slated to arrive in April at the same time as Heresy Act 3.
Destiny 2 players who participate in the event will experience three rotating dungeons, a dozen new weapons, and three different difficulty options.
Oddly enough, a number of Destiny users were able to try out some of this content way ahead of schedule following a botched maintenance period.
Destiny 2 devs quickly disable unfinished Rite of the Nine additions
On March 11, Destiny 2’s downtime began on schedule but ended roughly two hours later than intended. Once the game came back online, players dove in to try out fresh additions like this year’s Guardian Games; yet, many stumbled across something else.
Bungie had unintentially deployed Rite of the Nine, meaning users could play incomplete dungeons like Prophecy, though the event’s social space remained off limits.
As fan account Destiny Bulletin noted, some people had even unlocked event-specific guns like the Prosecutor Auto Rifle. Such weapons were incomplete, however, their designs unfinished and befitting greybox levels.
The crew at Bungie acted quickly by disabling the Rite of the Nine activities and all related rewards. Bungie stated in a social media post, “This content is still in the oven and [we] are looking forward to the completed versions being released at a later date. We apologize for the hiccup!”
Destiny 2 players need not worry too much, since disabling the activities will not require another lenghty maintenance period.
This isn’t the first time Bungie has accidentally unleashed access to unreleased weapons. In mid-February, select players randomly received Heresy Act 2 weapons in their Destiny Item Manager days ahead of the Act’s launch date.
