Destiny 2’s original campaign, The Red War, might never be playable again on live servers, after it became apparent that it’s no longer possible to access it internally at developer Bungie.
Sci-fi writer Matthew Martineau filed a lawsuit against Bungie in 2024, alleging that the Red Legion faction that appears so prominently in The Red War campaign was plagiarized from the author’s WordPress writings.
As first reported by The Game Post, in another declaration related to the case, Head of Engineering David Aldridge confirmed several facts about the current state of the content. Crucially, developers are no longer able to run the campaign at all due to changes in the engine’s code.
The full statement from Aldridge reads as follows:
“The ‘Red War’ legacy build can no longer run because its outdated code is incompatible with Destiny 2’s evolved underlying operational framework, which has evolved considerably since the “Red War” campaign was retired.”
The purpose of the statement was to make clear to the court that Bungie is unable to provide a copy of the game as it was in 2017, but it puts pay to faint hopes that the campaign could return to the main game in the future.
Bungie using YouTube videos to make their case

All of the above comes after Game File reported that Bungie was forced to turn to YouTube videos and compilations to make their case properly in court. As stated further on in the declaration, this was the only option left available to them without redesigning the entire code for The Red War
“The third-party originating materials appended to the Declaration of Jonathan To, are the best possible way (and indeed, the only feasible way) for the Court to review the accused work,” Aldridge said.
The historical gripe with the Destiny Content Vault is that far more goes in than ever reappears again on live servers. Indeed, none of the historical campaigns that were vaulted in the intervening have ever been made available again, and with this news, it seems less likely than ever.
