The problematic launch of Battlefield 2042 contributed considerably to its player base trickling off after launch, but it’s still thriving with a strong fanbase over three years on.
Of course, like other FPS games, the title also has its share of ups and downs throughout these years. Looking at how many players are currently playing the game is one way to give you an insight into how well it’s doing, so we’ve sifted through the data to explore Battlefield 2042’s player count in 2025.

Battlefield 2042’s player count in April
BF2042 has had an average of 6,226 players in April 2025, peaking at 13,617 compared to March, where its overall count was met with a decrease of 12.71%.
The last time the game gained this sort of traction was in November 2024, peaking at over 30,000 players. However, this number declined in the following months until March, when there was a resurgence with an average player count of 7,133.3 on Steam, a 10.18% increase from February. However, the shooting game was met with a decline yet again in April.
This decline has been part of an ongoing trend, and it’s even more apparent when looking back to November 2024. During this time, the player count averaged 13,818 players, followed by a drop of over 4,000 users in December to 9,203.
It’s important to remember that these figures from Steam Charts only consider PC details, though, so the overall numbers across all platforms combined will likely be much bigger.
2042’s player base on PC also fluctuated throughout 2024, ranging from as high as 13,000 players to as low as 7,000 between January and December. We’ve highlighted a comparison of average players per month for last year in the graph below:

2042’s peak player count on Steam was 107,006 players in November 2021, when the game originally launched.
Although it hasn’t come close to reaching these numbers since it still maintains a dedicated community that continues to log in daily.
Playerbase compared to competitors
Battlefield 2042 isn’t the most popular shooting game these days, and it’s currently the third most popular game in its franchise on Steam in April 2025, with both Battlefield V and Battlefield 1 maintaining over 7,000 and 9,000 players on average in comparison.
When stacked up against other FPS titles, 2042’s player base is also nowhere near as large as games like Call of Duty, Apex Legends, and Overwatch 2.
